Loo Roll : charcoal trash drawing

Charcoal Drawing What can I say? I've seen these tubes 10,000 times before.

So have you.

But have you ever noticed their beautiful spiraling spine; the ripped shreds of paper left clinging to the roll; or seen the contrast between the rough dark exterior cardboard and the perfect smooth white interior?

I find something very satisfying about the way the light reveals the underlying perfection of the geometric cylinder, but it is the man made imperfections that make each one interesting, make each one unique.

So when was the last time you contemplated a loo roll?

(having a tough time naming this one, so please help me out and leave a comment - thanks!)

Fries : charcoal garbage drawing

Charcoal Drawing : Fries Tonight I hate Thursdays Thursday is laundry day. Thursday is cleaning the toilet day. Thursday is sorting the recycling day. Thursday is running errands day.

But I love Thursday Night. Thurday Night is chicken nuggets for the dog. Thursday Night is Burger Night Thursday Night we have fries.

Coffee Cup Art Illustration : charcoal still life drawing

Name that Sketch : Cup I'm one of those really annoying people that will not leave their cup alone when the coffee is done. It gets crushed, folded, ripped and  re-sculpted and turned into"art". This is quite a tame re-creation, but I liked the spirally crunch effect so much and knew that I wanted to draw it. It took SUPREME effort not to touch it again.

Colored Pencil Drawing : Bags 2 : Abstract Still Life

Work in Progress Hooray! I'm very happy with this one. I really like how the two extremes of light and dark weave their way through the picture. I'm also pleased to have added some new colors to my regular selection - rose carmine, pompeian red and cadmium orange. And some luschious magenta vibrates with the ever-present mauve, deep  in the shadows. All these rosy colors make the whole drawing glow with warmth.

Banana Peel : charcoal drawing : art from trash

Name that Sketch : Banana Skin Boy was this fun to draw! The elegantly simple twisting lines; the contrasting textures of the slick skin and the rough inside and that weird fuzzy stalk. And all against the clock - banana skins don't last too long, especially under a hot studio lamp. Such a good afternoon, and such a delicious smell of warm banana.

Noodle Box : charcoal drawing : creative art from garbage

Growing up in Britain, I only ever saw these in the movies or on imported American TV shows; a gathering of people casually picking and choosing and sharing the delicacies from within the litter of elegant little boxes, laughing with friends or burning the midnight oil on an important deadline.

Even now they retain a certain exotic mystery that gives me a thrill of pleasure and reminds me that I am on an adventure in a foreign land.

Wizened Grapes : charcoal drawing of trash

Name that Sketch #5 Raisins in the making - these wizened old guys caught my eye just before they hit the trash. All those fiddly details did cause me a bit of cramp though, so maybe they're not the only ones showing signs of age.

Work in Progress Work in Progress

The whirlwind of the show has passed and the  pencil pot has been replenished and it is so good to be back working on this piece again.

The texture of the cold press paper is so lovely for the paper bags, but it is much more delicate to work with. The paper does not hold the pencil as well my regular hot press paper, making it very easy to smudge.

I am trying to use this to my advantage in some places by creating delicate blends of color in the highlight areas, but I have to be much more careful than usual, especially with the shadows.
